History The Maryland
Beltway Lady Cougars (MDBLC) is a non-profit organization committed to providing competitive basketball experiences, academic
and cultural enrichment for girls between the ages of 6-18 in the Washington Metropolitan area. The MDBLC was organized in 1992 as a result of the merging of the Beltway AAU and the Kettering/Largo Cougars' Girls
Basketball Teams.
The MDBLC participates in the Potomac Valley Regional AAU Association and the National AAU Association.
AAU is the Amateur Athletic Union, which is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States.
Competitions are conducted on local, regional and state levels throughout the United States. Winners of the regional
and state competitions meet at a national site and play for the AAU/USA Junior Olympic National Championships. Through hard
work, determination and commitment toward academic development and amateur sports, many of our girls gain opportunities to
further both their education and sports play in college. In most cases the girls receive scholarships at these colleges.
MDBLC's Commitment MDBLC is committed
to developing its athletes not just in sports but also in areas of academic, cultural and spiritual enrichment. Our
vision is to develop their skills to the highest possible level. We want to teach our young girls to be competitive
athletes, academic scholars and successful ladies. MDBLC strives to balance the academic, cultural and athletic achievement
with family community and church involvement. Community service activities will be a recognized part of growth. Parent,
community, and local government are equal partners in developing and educating our youth. From this aspect MDBLC has
advisory committees that advise and provide operational insight to our programs.
Through public, private, community, church, and family partnership, MDBLC creates the unique opportunity
to give our young girls the skills and confidence to excel, enhance self-esteem, and promote striving to be the best that
one can be. The girls are taught how to aim high in every aspect of their lives. The program's most import contribution
is the time devoted to preparing our young girls for the academic and personal challenges they will meet in life. MDBLC
is committed to its faculty, counselors, and coaches in their development, especially through enabling them to develop innovative
approaches in instructing, which is an essential ingredient to the program's success.
